Finally, Simón Bolívar, the man who played a crucial role in Latin America’s successful independence from Spain, is getting the attention he deserves - a Hollywood, big budget film called “The Liberator” - a name many still call him.

The two-hour film, musically directed by world-renowned Venezuelan conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, is among the costliest movies ever produced in Latin America, according to the Associated Press. It debuted in Venezuela, on the anniversary of Bolivar's birthday (July 24), and it is expected to premiere in the U.S. this fall.

Following the defeat of the Spanish Empire, Bolívar became president of El Gran Colombia (made up of what is now Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) from 1819 to 1830. Many say he was one of the most influential political leaders who laid the groundwork for democracy in much of Latin America.
