National Rum Day is August 16, and in honor of it, this week's cocktail is a delicious concoction that originated in Cuba.
The mojito consists of white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water and mint, although the original Cuban recipe uses yerba buena, or “good herb,” which is part of the mint family.
To make a mojit,o you can start by muddling a few mint leaves, a spoon of sugar and a teaspoon of lime juice. Then add crushed ice, and a good white rum like Bacardi, which is perhaps the closest we, in the United States, can get to the original Havana Club. Finally, mix and serve.
People have become very creative with mojitos, there are fruit-flavored mojitos such as mango, strawberry and pineapple. There’s also variations of mojitos that have particular cultural staples like an English mojito, which uses gin instead of rum, among many others.
This weekend, try making your own variation at home, it will not disappoint.
