Uruguayan President José Mujica, known for his pro-marijuana stance, apparently also has a penchant for another herb - yerba mate.
Yerba mate, native to the subtropical rainforests of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, is commonly imbibed as a tea in South America. Mujica recently met with farmers to complain about the high prices of the herb and realized it is being produced at a much lower price in Paraguay.
The Associated Press reports that Muijica told farmers, on Thursday, that the $10 Brazil charges for approximately 2 pounds (1 kg) of the tea, is too costly for the average Uruguayan. The same quanitity is sold in Paraguay for half the cost.
